ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao
Qingdao, China

The 171 sailors from 21 nations were officially welcomed at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao opening ceremony on Monday 13 October.
After ISAF Vice-Presidents' Quanhai Li and Gary Jobson declared the second edition of ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao open the sailors focus is now on the first day of racing.

Big winds passed through Qingdao on Monday with the remnants of Typhoon Vongfong affecting the area but clear skies and a steady breeze greeted the early risers in the Chinese City.

A north west breeze with 7-8 knots and gusts of 12 knots will be on the cards on day one and all is set for a 13:00 start time. A strong current will be present, hitting a peak of 2 knots.

Within the sailing pack there are several strong sailors aiming for Sailing World Cup gold, their share of the prize money, ranking points and qualifying for the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Greece's Pavlos Kagialis and Panagiotis Mantis come into Qingdao fresh off of a bronze medal at the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The pair have found excellent form throughout the year and are looking forward to racing in the 18-boat fleet, "We are looking forward to racing in Qingdao, it is a great place for sailing and the forecast looks promising for nice wind. The fleet is not as big as usual but the level will be high enough for a great event," said Mantis, "All the competitors are in form after the ISAF Worlds in Santander."

With the likes of ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami gold medallists Sofian Bouvet and Jeremie Mion (FRA) and 2013 and 2014 Junior World Champions Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp (ESP) the competition will be tough but Mantis is aiming for a top spot, "A top three result is always good at ISAF regattas because the quality of the fleet is always high."

Tom Burton (AUS), Tonci Stipanovic (CRO), Pavlos Kontides (CYP) and Bruno Fontes (BRA) will spearhead the Laser fleet whilst a small yet strong Laser Radial fleet will see Tatiana Drozdovskaya (BLR) and Sara Winther (NZL) competing.

The Men's RS:X is the largest fleet in Qingdao with 37 competitors whilst the Women's RS:X will see 30 competitors line up. The Women's 470 has ten competitors.

Racing is scheduled to commence at 13:00 local time.
